La Maestra Community Health Center hosts facility tours and a free community health fair as part of the 2006 National Health Center Week

(SAN DIEGO, CA) ****As part of the 2006 National Health Center Week, August 6 through 12, La Maestra Community Health Centers (La Maestra) will host facility tours and a free community health fair on Wednesday, August 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the City Heights facility at 4185 Fairmont Avenue, San Diego, CA 92105.

Each year the second week of August is dedicated to the recognition of the service and contributions of community, migrant, homeless and public housing health centers across the nation.  “La Maestra is very proud to be involved in National Health Center Week.  We are excited to share our resources and programs that support the surrounding community’s ability to live healthy and productive lives,” said Zara Marselian, CEO of La Maestra.

La Maestra is opening its doors to local media, community leaders, government officials and healthcare advocates for a facility tour.  The tour is a great opportunity to learn about the medical, dental and mental heath services and programs available at La Maestra.

In addition, La Maestra will be having a free community health fair that will offer free health screenings including glucose testing for diabetics, blood pressure testing and dental screenings for children ages one to five and women that are pregnant.  There will also be free food, raffle prize giveaways and live entertainment.  EXXA 91.7 FM will be broadcasting live to help educate the public and several health care providers will be onsite to answer questions and provide health care and insurance information.

Since 1990, La Maestra has been providing quality healthcare and community services to thousands of ethnically diverse clients in San Diego.  The facility in City Heights serves more than 23,000 people a year with a staff of 147 doctors, nurses, counselors and social workers who speak 19 different languages and dialects.   Clients of La Maestra can receive a full range of primary medical services including dental, behavioral health, vision and geriatric care as well as social services including job placement, eligibility and housing assistance.

La Maestra provides services through an assortment of 13 residential buildings on a single city block.  As a means to improve services, in March of 2006 La Maestra launched an aggressive $10 million “Heart of the Community Campaign,” that will allow La Maestra to build a “green,” healthcare facility just a block away in City Heights.  This will be the first facility of its kind in California.  The three story 32,000 square foot center is due to break ground in February of 2007.
